چکیده

Increasing attention is being focused on the role(s) that obesity may play in the development of cardiovascular disease, particularly congestive heart failure (CHF).1,2 Several indirect or associated effects are potential culprits. For example, obesity is strongly associated with many atherosclerotic risk factors, including arterial hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.3 Therefore, it is not surprising that obese people tend to have premature and accelerated coronary artery disease, a common precursor of CHF.4,5 In addition to promoting coronary heart disease, obesity has been associated with atrial fibrillation, another condition that can contribute to CHF.6 Lastly, obesity often adversely impacts right heart function via the ill effects of sleep disordered breathing or restrictive lung disease.7 The aforementioned factors may individually or collectively produce a clinical syndrome of CHF in patients who are obese.

The Bigger Brauer Group Is Really Big

I show that each étale n-cohomology class on noetherian schemes comes from a Čech cocycle, provided that any n-tuple of points admits an affine open neighborhood. Together with results of Raeburn and Taylor on the bigger Brauer group, this implies that for schemes such that each pair of points admits an affine open neighborhood, any étale Gm-gerbe comes from a coherent central separable algebra...

Is bigger really better? Relative and absolute body size influence individual growth rate under competition

Models suggest that the mechanism of competition can influence the growth advantage associated with being large (in absolute body size or relative to other individuals in the population). Large size is advantageous under interference, but disadvantageous under exploitative competition. We addressed this prediction in a laboratory experiment on Rana temporaria tadpoles competing for limited food...

Is bigger really bigger? Differential responses to temperature in measures of body size of the mosquito, Aedes albopictus.

When confronted with variation in temperature, most ectotherms conform to a growth rule that "hotter is smaller". This phenomenon can have important implications on population dynamics, interactions with other species, and adaptation to new environments for arthropods. However, the impact of other environmental factors and genetics may affect that general rule. Furthermore, most studies measure...
